How to spread kindness during lockdown

If there’s one thing we have learnt throughout this pandemic, it’s that there is a lot of lovely people out there spreading kindness in all sorts of ways.

You are probably already spreading kindness in one way or another without even realising it, but if you are looking for ways to actively spread some kindness, then let us share some with you:

Be kind to yourself:

In order to best help others, you first have to help yourself. Take the time to do something nice simply for you, as often as you can. Giving yourself this time will calm you and open up headspace to deal with others and situations in a more balanced and considered approach.

Be nice to others:

No one really knows what someone else is going through or how they are handling a situation. Smile, lend a friendly ear, put your phone away and give them your full attention, ask someone how they are doing, say thank you when someone does something for you. Just simply by being nice to someone and showing your appreciation of them as an individual, you will actively be helping them to feel a little bit better too.

Be charitable:

Cook a meal for a vulnerable person on your street. Donate money to a good cause. Donate food to your local food bank. Volunteer to help support the elderly or vulnerable in your area. Walk a neighbour’s dog for them if they can’t. Have a clear out and donate the items to a charity shop (hold onto them until they are open). Whether you can be giving with your time, your money or your things, you’ll be touching more lives than you know.

Be local business minded:

Many small and independent businesses have been operating throughout lockdown. Birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, Wednesdays – all are deserving of a little something nice. Find what local businesses are open for orders and get ordering for yourself, your nearest and your dearest. You’ll be supporting local business and letting your loved ones know you’re thinking of them.

Be creative:

Bring together your creative side and your kind spirit with some projects that will keep you entertained. If you are making face coverings for you, make some more for other people too. Make a card for someone and send it with a nice hand-written message inside. Bake a cake for health workers at your local healthcare site. Record yourself recreating a movie scene that reminds you of someone and send it to them. Taking the time to physically make something for someone can be mood boosting for the both of you.

Be kind to nature:

Plant wildflowers for insects and birds. Donate to plant a tree. Recycle and reuse as much as you can. Buy local honey. Switch to paperless mail. Walk or cycle and avoid using your car. Start a community garden. Switch off plugs at the wall at night. Air dry wash loads when you can. Have a vegetarian or vegan day once a week. Switch to energy efficient bulbs and turn off lights when they’re not needed. Don’t bug spray your plants, leave the bugs for the birds (save your egg shells, crush them down and sprinkle them around your plants to deter slugs and snails). Doing your bit for the environment is kind for the planet and everyone on it.

These are just a few of the ways in which you can spread some kindness during this time of lockdown and social distancing. Now go, spread your kindness wings and help make the world that little bit brighter!
